Flux Selected by Frontier for a Pre-purchase
September 18, 2024
Today, Frontier, the advance market commitment for carbon removal, announced that it selected Flux as part of its 2024 prepurchase cycle. Flux removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere using Enhanced Rock Weathering in Africa.
Frontier was founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, and McKinsey Sustainability, and members have committed to purchase over $1 billion of carbon removal tons by 2030. Frontier facilitates prepurchases to accelerate the development of early-stage suppliers like Flux piloting new technologies. Suppliers receive funds upfront before tons have actually been delivered.
“This prepurchase from Frontier is great recognition that Flux is on the right track to providing large scale, affordable carbon removal with brilliant co-benefits,” said Sam Davies, CEO of Flux. “Frontier’s experience in the sector and rigorous due diligence process has been invaluable for us so far and we look forward to delivering these high quality carbon removal tons”.
Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is a process that accelerates the natural weathering of silicate rocks to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. When crushed silicate rocks, like basalt, are applied to soil, they react with atmospheric CO2 dissolved in rainwater. This reaction releases base cations like calcium and magnesium, which then bind with dissolved CO2, creating stable carbonates and bicarbonates. These products are then naturally transported through rivers and streams to oceans where they are stored for >10,000 years. As the rock powders dissolve, they also increase the pH of soils, add micro and macro nutrients, and improve farmers yields.
Working in Africa, Flux leverages some of the best climatic conditions in the world for speeding up (or enhancing) this process, and delivers life-changing co-benefits to farmers with degraded soils and limited or no access to lime and synthetic fertilisers.
