Douala, Cameroon – In a significant move to scale permanent carbon dioxide removal in Africa, Flux, a pioneer in Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), and African Food Security, an agricultural development company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement a large-scale ERW project in Cameroon. This collaborative effort has the potential to permanently remove 1 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere whilst improving food security by boosting maize yields, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers, improving soil fertility, and creating local jobs.

The project, set in the fertile landscapes of Cameroon, seeks to leverage the enormous potential of ERW, a promising Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technique. By spreading finely ground silicate rocks on farmlands, this method not only improves soil fertility and crop yields but also facilitates carbon sequestration. This initiative is particularly tailored to enhance maize production, a staple crop that supports the livelihoods of millions in the region.

Starting with an initial phase of 2,000 hectares, where Flux will implement measuring reporting and verification procedures to accurately model and quantify CO2 drawdown from the project, the partnership will then scale up 10,000 hectares at a time until the total project area is implemented.

African Food Security, committed to turning Africa into a net food exporter while creating sustainable job opportunities, finds in this partnership a stride towards its five-year goals which include the creation of 100,000 jobs and achieving 10 million metric tons in annual food production. This project also aims to enhance regional reputational value by promoting sustainable agricultural practices across 54 African countries.

Impact and Future Outlook

This project is expected to set a benchmark for how ERW can be rolled out on a large scale across Africa. Both Flux and African Food Security believe that this initiative will not only transform agricultural practices in Cameroon but also serve as a model for other regions.

The MOU underscores the commitment of both organizations to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on Climate Action, Life on Land, Decent Work and Economic Growth, No Poverty, and Gender Equality.
